Chapter Sixteen

Leonard didn't go to the track. Instead, he staked out his own building, planning to wait until J left and follow her to wherever she might end up. In case he happened to miss her, he had attached a very small tracking beacon to the jacket she never seemed to be without. It never hurt to be prepared for any eventuality, and J had proven herself remarkably resourceful. He hated using such expensive equipment, but with J actually exhibiting some strange behavior, he hoped that a nice bonus would be forthcoming from both of his employers.

An hour and more passed with no sign of movement from J. Surely, it couldn't take her that long to get ready to leave. He had heard human women were notorious with their primping and such before going out, but J had never struck him as the type. She was the Anti-Primp.

He got up from his hiding place and made his way back to the office. It was empty. He searched the place, even knocking on the door to J's room, but she was gone. It didn't feel like she was lurking in there, waiting for him to leave. It just felt empty.

But how the heaven did she get out without him seeing her? He switched on the tracking beacon and saw that she was nowhere to be found in the Underworld. Which meant that she was most likely topside—somewhere in the human world. Again he wondered how she could have slid past him. There weren't that many public ports to the Mundane world and Leonard highly doubted J was able to afford her own personal, permanent port or staff a wizard who could open one at will without raising a suspect amount of energy. Whenever she’d had to go topside for a case before, he’d always left the Public Port Pass for her.

He gathered a few more things since this was looking to be a long night, and began his trek to the public port station closest to the office, pondering this new puzzle. There were several possibilities for J's disappearing act: she could phase herself through walls, she could turn invisible, or she could shrink to the size of a microscopic organism. All three powers were ones that were fairly common in the Underworld, but only among the supernatural creatures who lived there. He'd never heard of a human having any kind of power like that.

Still, there had to be an explanation for it. And Leonard was determined to find it. He quickstepped it to the nearest port station, Port pass already in hand. These babies were hard to come by, especially if they were legitimately official like his—surprisingly—was. There were a limited number of ports earmarked for public use to the Mundane world, and these were closely monitored. Complex magical systems accounted for each creature going through the ports, their destination, and the number of times they visited upstairs. It allowed the Magistrate’s office to track who was where at any given time, narrowing down the list of suspects in case of a Balance Breach.
